My Hotel Strategy for First Quarter of 2018

In 2017, I spent more than 220 nights in a hotel, which was 60% of the year away from my husband. I could have focused my stays on one hotel chain to amass many points. However, I spread the stays across multiple programs since Tran and I redeem these points at different hotels depending on locations and award availability. Besides, these programs get devalued frequently so it doesn’t make sense to be loyal to one. Therefore, I start 2018 as:

  • Hilton Diamond (after 60 nights)
  • Marriott & SPG Platinum (after 75 nights)
  • IHG Platinum (from holding Chase IHG credit card)

Every quarter, almost every hotel chain offers different promotions to entice their guests. Depending on my assignments, the three most common hotel chains that I stay with are Hilton, Marriott, and IHG. Unfortunately, Hyatt and SPG don’t have properties in small towns.

Let’s look at the promotions for first quarter 2018.

My Goals

Hilton treated us quite well when we stayed at Conrad Tokyo and Conrad Singapore for our honeymoon. Therefore, I would like to re-qualify for its highest status, which is very doable at 60 nights per year.

Because I was able to roll over elite nights from 2017, I start the year with 20 nights at Marriott. Add in the 15 nights from having a Chase Marriott business card and I only need 40 more nights to re-qualify for Marriott/SPG Platinum.

With fewer nights required at Marriott, I would like to stay more at Hyatt to obtain Explorist status for lounge access for free breakfast. Tran and I enjoy eating breakfast at hotels before we explore the destinations. We previously stayed at Park Hyatt-Paris, Andaz Tokyo, and Hyatt Regency Kyoto and had to pay for breakfast at the latter two. Since we have the free annual nights just from holding the Chase Hyatt credit card, we will stay at more Hyatt properties in the future and would love free breakfast.

My Plan

As written in my previous strategy post, IHG offers Accelerate promotion to customers with different challenges to earn bonus points. Last quarter, I earned more than 91,000 bonus points after all the challenges were completed. My offer for this quarter isn’t as generous but I would never say no to free bonus points. These points will be saved for future stays as we will burn a few by returning to the Intercontinal Danang (part 1, part 2) to celebrate our wedding anniversary this year. Yes, we love this beautiful property that much.

I will definitely take advantage of Wyndham’s generous offer. After 2 stays, I will have 15,000 points, which is enough for 1 night at any of their 8,000+ properties. Wyndham doesn’t have many cool properties but since last summer, it has partnered with Caesars Entertainment. I can now use Wyndham points to book at places such as Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Rio, and Paris in Las Vegas.

As of today, I have completed most challenges for IHG and will complete Wyndham’s promotion this week. I have the rest of the quarter to focus on Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt.

Parting Thoughts

If you have any plans to stay at these hotel chains this quarter, even if it is for an overnight stay, make sure to register and maximize your earning potential. Any number of points earned is better than zero. It doesn’t cost anything to enroll in these loyalty programs.

We are going to Thailand and Vietnam soon and will be using points to cover all hotel stays. These promotions will help us replenish our points war chest for future trips.

Are there other hotel earning opportunities we are missing?
